Ascend TMS at a glance

AscendTMS is a browser-based TMS from InMotion Global, Inc., founded in 2015 and located in Brandon, Florida, according to its press releases. The web app lives at ascendtms.com and the marketing site at thefreetms.com, branded “The ‘Don’t Pay Us’ TMS.” Ascend claims “Over 66,000 companies” and calls itself the world’s most widely used TMS.

It sells to brokers, carriers, fleets, 3PLs and shippers. Features include load management, dispatch, AscendTracker, invoicing, driver pay, LTL, e-signatures, outbound EDI and a shipper directory. DAT and Truckstop search and posting run inside the TMS if you hold your own subscription. In February 2026 Ascend bought LoadPilotTMS and moved its users over.

Ascend TMS pricing

Prices are from the AscendTMS pricing page as of September 10, 2026. Ascend says it “Never charges for drivers, trucks, or loads (ever),” and offers “No Contracts. No Setup Fees. No Credit Card Needed.” Billing is month to month on a card, and enterprise volume discounts are available by phone. Capterra still shows a free Basic plan for up to 2 users and Premium at $99, which is older than the current vendor page.

AI features

AscendAI, announced May 7, 2026, is an AI feature suite “included free for AscendTMS users” with no setup. The announcement doesn’t list named agents.

What reviewers say

Ascend has the largest review base in this group: 4.9/5 on Capterra from 367 reviews, with ease of use at 4.8 and customer service at 4.9 (as of September 10, 2026). One reviewer called it “very user-friendly with strong integrations.” Another said the low price “doesn’t come at a loss of service.” The complaints are specific. A Capterra reviewer said users are “Not able to have multiple ascend screens open at the same time with different filters,” another wrote “you can only upload one doc at a time,” and others mention fast auto-logout, not being able to “toggle between different company’s log ins,” and per-user costs that add up as teams grow.

Why teams look for Ascend TMS alternatives

Many people who search Ascend TMS pricing are checking the plans before signing up, and the reviews give them good reason to. The ones who keep looking usually hit one of these.

• Screen and document limits. The single-screen and one-document-at-a-time complaints matter most to ops teams handling many loads at once.
• Generalist design. Ascend serves brokers, carriers and shippers in one product. Some brokers want a TMS shaped only around brokerage work.
• Enforcement. Brokers who’ve had a load dispatched without a signed rate con, or billed without a POD, look for a system that blocks those steps instead of relying on habit.

• Live today: load board, multi-stop load entry, carrier booking and swap history, versioned rate cons on your letterhead, document storage, Load Market tracking with green, yellow and red ETA risk, alerts, tasks, billing queue, reports and an append-only audit log.

Drawbacks

• New, with one design-partner customer, Bronco Logistics, and none of Ascend’s review history.
• DAT and Truckstop posting, EDI, e-signatures and invoice sending are planned, not live. QuickBooks Online and AI load intake are in development.
• No carrier features such as driver pay. The carrier TMS is in early access.

Best for: Brokers and 3PLs across truckload, LTL, intermodal and drayage who want named AI agents without enterprise pricing.

Starting price: $375/mo for 5 users (Pro) or $750/mo for up to 12 users (Growth), as of September 10, 2026 (Port TMS pricing). EDI, API and onboarding fees may apply.

Strengths

• Coverage, Procaller and Dispatch agents are shipping, trained on your SOPs, with 3 months of promotional access on Pro.
• One-click DAT and Truckstop posting, e-signatures on rate cons and BOLs, and white-labeled customer and carrier portals.
• 4.8/5 on Capterra (6 reviews). A reviewer praised how “easy it was to move around in the system.”

Drawbacks

• Agent pricing after the promotion isn’t public.
• No free trial, and the contract term isn’t stated.
• A small review base. A Capterra reviewer said “Some workflows/views could be tidied up.”

EZ TMS (formerly EZ Loader TMS): simple broker TMS, seat-priced

Best for: Small FTL and LTL brokerages that want a straightforward broker-only TMS with a built-in CRM.

Starting price: $500/mo Standard Plan, “Includes 3 user seats,” with more seats priced per seat, as of September 10, 2026 (EZ TMS pricing).

Strengths

• “Flat-rate. No per-load fees.” No feature gates.
• Built-in CRM, historical rate engine, digital rate cons and carrier onboarding, and a document splitter.
• Two-way QuickBooks Online sync and integrations with DAT, Truckstop, MacroPoint, Highway and RMIS.

Drawbacks

• A $1,500 setup fee unless you sign a 12-month agreement.
• Contracts auto-renew unless you give 60 days’ notice, and early termination carries “a buyout fee of 50% of the remaining contract value.”
• No AI agents marketed and no G2 or Capterra listing to check.

Descartes Aljex: established broker TMS with visibility built in

Best for: Brokerages from 2 to several hundred users who want MacroPoint and MyCarrierPortal bundled with the TMS.

Starting price: Essential $699/mo for 5 users, Professional from $999/mo for 15 users, Enterprise from $2,375/mo, as of September 10, 2026 (Aljex pricing). Setup or implementation fees apply.

Strengths

• G2 and Capterra reviewers commonly cite an “outdated interface,” slow speed with large data sets, and uneven support.
• Descartes bought Tai in August 2026 and now owns two broker TMSs. Its plans for each aren’t public yet.

• Contracts auto-renew, cancellation needs notice “at least 14 business days prior,” and “no refunds are granted” after renewal.
• A Capterra reviewer wrote “Loads can take longer than expected to update.”
• Another mentioned “Updates that sometimes seem to have a lot of bugs.”

How to choose an Ascend TMS alternative

Ascend is hard to beat on price for a tiny team. The decision gets interesting once you add people or volume.

• Count users 12 months out. Price each option at today’s headcount and next year’s. Per-user, per-seat, per-load and flat pricing cross over at different points.
• List the must-have features by plan. Ascend’s EDI and e-signatures sit on Pro. Port TMS says EDI and API charges may apply. Aljex adds portals on Professional.
• Test your busiest hour. Run a demo with many loads open, multiple documents to upload, and two people working the same load.
• Read the renewal terms. Ascend is month to month. EZ TMS and BrokerPro auto-renew with notice windows.
• Decide how much the system should enforce. If missed rate cons and missing PODs cost you money, ask each vendor to show which steps the software blocks outright.
