Where AscendTMS is strong
AscendTMS is the price anchor in broker software. Its marketing site, thefreetms.com, calls it “The ‘Don’t Pay Us’ TMS,” and it claims over 66,000 companies. With 367 Capterra reviews, it has one of the largest review counts of any TMS we compare.
- Low cost, low commitment. Plans start at $69 per user per month on the AscendTMS pricing page, with “No Contracts. No Setup Fees. No Credit Card Needed.” Setup, support and training are free.
- A lot of features for the price. Basic lists “Over 230 Standard Features.” Pro adds Shipper CRM Live, E-Sign, outbound EDI, order management and AI.
- Brokers, carriers and shippers. Dispatch, driver pay, AscendTracker, AscendLTL, invoicing and a 26,000-shipper directory.
- AI at no charge. AscendAI, announced May 7, 2026, is “included free for AscendTMS users” with no setup.
- Load boards inside the TMS. DAT and Truckstop search and posting, if you hold your own subscriptions.
On Capterra, reviewers call it “very user-friendly with strong integrations” and say affordability “doesn’t come at a loss of service.” Complaints include “you can only upload one doc at a time,” fast auto-logout, and per-user costs that add up as teams grow. Where FreightVero is different
What per-user pricing costs at your headcount
Here’s plain arithmetic on AscendTMS’s published per-user prices next to FreightVero’s plans.
- 5 users: AscendTMS Basic $345/mo, Premium $595/mo, Pro $745/mo. FreightVero Starter $349/mo, capped at 250 loads.
- 15 users: AscendTMS Basic $1,035/mo, Premium $1,785/mo, Pro $2,235/mo. FreightVero Growth $749/mo with unlimited loads.
At 5 users, AscendTMS Basic costs $4 less than FreightVero Starter and has no load cap. The gap flips as seats grow. Feature sets differ by plan on both sides, so compare what each tier includes on the FreightVero pricing page.
Checkpoints enforced at the database level, not a UI setting
FreightVero sends every status change through one database function. Each checkpoint looks for specific proof before the load moves.
- Alerted: active carrier, approved compliance status on the carrier record, driver and truck details, tracking accepted.
- Carrier Dispatched: latest rate con version signed, with the signed copy uploaded.
- Freight On Board: BOL and freight photos.
- Delivered: POD plus the signer’s first and last name.
We haven’t tested AscendTMS’s required-document settings. If you try Premium or Pro free for 30 days, check whether a user can mark a load dispatched with no signed rate con on file. See how FreightVero handles it.
Custom development
AscendTMS is self-serve by design. FreightVero also offers custom TMS development for brokerages whose process a packaged product doesn’t fit. The Bronco Logistics build went from its first database migration on Aug 28, 2026 to live Load Market tracking on Sept 3, 2026.
Where AscendTMS is ahead
E-signatures, outbound EDI, LTL, load board posting and carrier features are live in AscendTMS. In FreightVero, e-signature, EDI, DAT and Truckstop are planned, and carrier TMS is in early access. FreightVero’s AI load intake is live, and the AI agent program is live from $1,995/mo.

Switching from AscendTMS
AscendTMS is month-to-month, so the timing is yours. We scope the move on a demo call and don’t publish an implementation timeline. Plan for these points:
- Customer and carrier records import into FreightVero from CSV. There’s no open-load import, so finish in-flight loads first.
- If you use AscendTMS for your own trucks, keep that running. FreightVero’s carrier TMS is in early access.
- Carriers sign rate cons outside FreightVero today, and you upload the signed copy.
- Load board posting from the TMS isn’t available yet.
- At 5 users or fewer, your software bill may go up. Decide whether the checkpoints are worth that to you.
The TMS migration page lists what to prepare.
