Tai TMS alternatives after the Descartes acquisition: pricing and 6 options (2026)

Descartes bought Tai in August 2026. Compare Tai's tiered pricing and terms with BrokerPro, Port TMS, Rose Rocket, McLeod PowerBroker, Aljex and FreightVero.

Short answer

Descartes bought Tai for about $100 million on August 24, 2026 and hasn’t published plans for Tai’s pricing or roadmap. Tai starts at $995/mo (as of September 10, 2026). Broker-only alternatives include BrokerPro ($950/mo base), Port TMS ($375/mo for 5 users) and FreightVero ($349/mo). Larger teams can compare Rose Rocket ($2,080/mo) and McLeod PowerBroker (quote).

Tai TMS at a glance

Tai Software is a 100% cloud TMS “built exclusively for freight brokers and 3PLs” moving domestic FTL and LTL, plus drayage and cross-border freight. It’s based in Huntington Beach, California, led by CEO Walter “Mitch” Mitchell, and cites “20+ years” in business. Its standout is direct LTL carrier API and EDI connectivity. The product covers quoting, carrier sourcing, load execution, tracking, billing, carrier bill audit, a branded client portal, workflow automations and custom reports.

Prices are from the Tai pricing page as of September 10, 2026. Every tier includes partner integrations, a branded client portal, a dedicated CSM, a dedicated launch and QBRs, with “competitive overage pricing” above the included shipments. There’s no free trial, and the implementation fee isn’t stated.

Contract terms

Tai’s about page says “No Lock-In.” Its terms of service say “After the initial term, the agreement will auto-renew in perpetuity,” and customers must cancel “at least sixty (60) days prior to the beginning of each Renewal Term.” Know your renewal date.

AI features

The Tai Track & Trace Agent, launched April 13, 2026, calls drivers, logs location and ETA, and moves loads to Delivered. It’s “Included for all Tai customers,” and its early access was “powered by CloneOps.ai.” Descartes describes Tai’s agents as extracting quote requests from inbound emails, making check calls and auditing carrier invoices against rate confirmations.

What reviewers say

Tai rates 4.4/5 on Capterra from 77 reviews (as of September 10, 2026). One reviewer wrote “The LTL functionality is fantastic,” and another said “The Workflow Automations and Custom reports allow us to create efficiencies.” Critical reviews say “Too many bugs with slow support resolution,” “The cost is a little high,” and “There is currently no parcel shipping option.”

Why teams look for Tai TMS alternatives

The Descartes acquisition

Descartes Systems Group (Nasdaq: DSGX) bought Tai from Accel-KKR for about US$100 million in cash. Descartes already owned Aljex, MacroPoint, MyCarrierPortal and 3GTMS, so it now runs two broker TMS products. Whether Tai and Aljex stay separate, and what happens to Tai’s pricing, isn’t public. Acquisitions can also bring more investment, so treat this as a reason to ask questions. We cover the details in what Tai customers should know about the Descartes deal.

Other reasons

  • Seat and shipment caps. Growth includes 2 staff logins and 200 shipments. A six-person team needs Premium at $2,465 a month.
  • Renewal terms. Perpetual auto-renewal with a 60-day window means a missed date locks in another term.
  • Support and bugs. Bug and support complaints appear in Capterra reviews, alongside strong praise for LTL.
  • No parcel. At least one reviewer wants parcel shipping, which Tai doesn’t offer.

FreightVero: flat-priced broker TMS with checkpoints in the database

FreightVero is our product, and it’s new. Here’s where it stands against Tai, feature by feature.

Best for: Brokers leaving Tai who want flat pricing without shipment caps, and a TMS that blocks dispatch and delivery steps that lack proof.

Starting price: Starter $349/mo (5 users, 250 loads a month), Growth $749/mo (15 users, unlimited loads), Scale from $1,500/mo (unlimited users), as of September 10, 2026. No per-load fees on any plan. Details on the pricing page.

Strengths

  • No shipment caps above Starter: Growth covers 15 users and unlimited loads for $749 a month.
  • Four checkpoints are enforced in the database. Dispatch needs the latest signed rate con version, Freight On Board needs a BOL and freight photos, and Delivered needs a POD with the signer’s full name. See how checkpoints work.
  • Live today: load board, multi-stop load entry, customer and carrier CSV import, carrier booking with swap history, versioned rate cons on your letterhead, Load Market tracking with green, yellow and red ETA risk, alerts, billing queue and an append-only audit log.

Drawbacks

  • New, with one design-partner customer, Bronco Logistics, and no review history.
  • No LTL rating, EDI or client portal. EDI is planned and the customer portal is in early access.
  • Agents work in writing, not voice. The seven AI agents and AI load intake are live. QuickBooks Online is in development.

FreightVero is not the right pick if you move meaningful LTL volume and need direct LTL carrier rating, or if customers require EDI today. Tai, McLeod and Port TMS handle those now. See FreightVero vs Tai TMS.

BrokerPro: broker-only, priced close to Tai

Best for: Freight brokers from roughly 50 loads a month to mid-market who want unlimited users and AI included.

Starting price: “Base Platform fee $950/mo,” with price driven by invoiced monthly load count, as of September 10, 2026 (BrokerPro pricing).

Strengths

  • “No seat limits. No feature gates.” Unlimited users and carriers.
  • BrokerPro AI, launched April 9, 2026 and powered by CloneOps.ai (the same vendor behind Tai’s early-access voice agent), handles carrier outreach, check calls and collections follow-up.
  • 4.6/5 on Capterra (56 reviews). A reviewer called it “Very easy to use.” BrokerPro’s own comparison page credits Tai’s LTL depth, which is a fair sign.

Drawbacks

  • Contracts auto-renew with notice due “at least 14 business days prior,” and “no refunds are granted” after renewal.
  • A Capterra reviewer wrote “Loads can take longer than expected to update.”
  • Some integrations may carry separate fees.

Port TMS: multimode coverage including small parcel

Best for: Brokers and 3PLs that want truckload, LTL, intermodal, drayage and small parcel in one TMS, with native agents.

Starting price: $375/mo for 5 users (Pro) or $750/mo for up to 12 users (Growth), as of September 10, 2026 (Port TMS pricing). EDI, API and onboarding fees may apply.

Strengths

  • Covers small parcel, which a Tai reviewer said was missing.
  • Coverage, Procaller and Dispatch agents shipping now.
  • Native EDI and API infrastructure, DAT and Truckstop posting, and customer and carrier portals.

Drawbacks

  • AI agents are free for 3 months, then priced in the proposal.
  • Only 6 Capterra reviews.
  • Contract term isn’t stated, and there’s no free trial.

Rose Rocket (TMS.ai): configurable platform with agents included

Best for: Mid-market brokers and 3PLs, especially those with some assets, who want no-code customization.

Starting price: “Starting at $2080/month” with unlimited users, as of September 10, 2026 (Rose Rocket pricing).

Strengths

  • Unlimited users on the base plan, which beats Tai’s login caps for larger teams.
  • TED, Rosie and Rocky agents included, and “Guaranteed go-live in 90 days.”
  • 4.4/5 on Capterra (35 reviews), with 4.6 for customer service.

Drawbacks

  • More than double Tai’s entry price.
  • A reviewer said reporting “doesn’t give your flexibility to create reports.”
  • Implementation fee and contract length aren’t public.

McLeod PowerBroker: the established choice for larger brokerages

Best for: Mid-market and enterprise brokers that want integrated accounting, EDI, a broad partner network and hosting choices.

Starting price: Not published, as of September 10, 2026 (McLeod PowerBroker).

Strengths

  • Founded 1985 and still owned by its founder and management, so no acquisition question.
  • PowerBroker integrations include DAT, Truckstop, MacroPoint, project44, Trucker Tools, Highway, RMIS, Parade and Vooma.
  • AI via RespondAI, Augment’s agent inside PowerBroker (August 2026), and a CloneOps.ai voice partnership announced October 28, 2025.

Drawbacks

  • No public pricing or implementation timeline.
  • PowerBroker has no separate Capterra or G2 page. McLeod’s LoadMaster rates 3.7/5 on Capterra, where one reviewer wrote “Very complicated, not easy to use at all.”
  • Built for bigger operations, so a small brokerage may find it heavy.

Descartes Aljex: the other Descartes broker TMS

Best for: Brokers who like Descartes-owned tools such as MacroPoint and MyCarrierPortal and want unlimited shipments.

Starting price: Essential $699/mo for 5 users, Professional from $999/mo for 15 users, as of September 10, 2026 (Aljex pricing). One-time setup or implementation fees apply.

Strengths

  • Unlimited shipments on every tier, so no overages.
  • MacroPoint, MyCarrierPortal, ProMiles, QuickBooks and DAT RateView on Essential.
  • 4.6/5 on G2 from 431 reviews.

Drawbacks

  • Same owner as Tai, so moving here doesn’t remove the question of what Descartes does next.
  • G2 and Capterra reviewers commonly cite an “outdated interface” and slow speed with large data.
  • AI comes mostly through partners.

How to choose a Tai TMS alternative

  • Check your renewal date first. Count back 60 days. That’s your real decision deadline.
  • Price your actual shipments. Take last quarter’s monthly shipment counts and staff logins, then price Tai’s tiers, BrokerPro’s volume pricing and flat plans against them.
  • Weigh LTL honestly. If LTL is a big share of revenue, Tai’s direct carrier connections are hard to replace. Ask every alternative to rate and dispatch a real LTL shipment in the demo.
  • Ask Descartes directly. Ask your CSM for anything in writing on pricing holds and product plans. Use the answer in your decision.
  • Plan the data move. Ask each vendor what they import (customers, carriers, open loads, documents) and who does the work. Our TMS migration page lists what to ask.

Frequently asked questions

Will Descartes merge Tai and Aljex?

Nothing public says so as of September 10, 2026. Descartes announced the Tai acquisition on August 24, 2026, and future product direction, pricing and any consolidation with Aljex haven't been announced. Tai customers should ask their account team for written answers before renewal.

Does Tai TMS offer a free trial?

No. Tai's pricing page doesn't offer a free trial as of September 10, 2026. Every plan includes a dedicated launch and CSM, and the implementation fee isn't stated. Ask for a sandbox or a scripted demo with your own loads instead.

What happens if I use more shipments than my Tai plan includes?

Tai charges overages above each tier's included shipments, which it calls "competitive overage pricing." The rate isn't published. Its terms define billable "TMS Shipment Transactions" by status, so ask Tai which statuses count before you estimate monthly cost.

Is FreightVero connected to Tai or Descartes?

No. FreightVero isn't owned by or affiliated with Tai, Descartes or any other vendor on this page. It's a new broker TMS with one design-partner customer, Bronco Logistics, and it publishes its pricing with no per-load fees on any plan.
